Saturday 9th May
The taxi picked us up from our house at 3.15am, after we'd had two hours of sleep! We got to Reading station in plenty of time for the 4am Railair coach and arrived at Heathrow Terminal 3 just before 5am. It wasn't hard to spot the long queue of British Heart Foundation tomatoes in their red fleeces with their big red bags!!! The flight to Madrid was ok, but then we had to suffer the 12-hour flight to Lima with Iberia Airlines. Once we'd arrived at Lima airport and collected our bags, we had to go through a traffic light lucky dip, where you press the button and if the light goes green you're safe, but if it goes red you have your bags searched! Brian was the only one of our group that got caught out (this wasn't a major surprise once we'd spent the week with him!). |
Waiting at Reading station 3:30am!

Eating dinner at the hotel
|
It was a 40-minute coach journey to our hotel, and passing through Lima it was easy to see why it's one of the most dangerous cities in the world to drive in! At the hotel we had a buffet dinner on the rooftop terrace and talked about what to expect over the next few days, including the possibility of getting altitude sickness! Everyone we spoke to seemed really nice and a good laugh so we were looking forward to the weeks ahead. |
After dinner we took a short walk to the main square where they had a little night-time market selling jewellery and art. It was like something from the movies, a city like nothing we'd ever seen before! By this time we were both incredibly tired after a long day of travelling, as by the time we went to bed it would have been around 4am UK time. The whole experience so far just seemed very surreal.
