Saturday 16th May
A wake-up call in the hotel at 6am got us up ready for the Perurail train from Aguas Calientes back to Ollantaytambo. It's owned by the same company as the Orient Express and had windows across the roof corners so you could see high up into the mountains. Part way through the journey some strange music started and a man appeared in a random outfit carrying a toy lama down the aisle! The music suddenly got faster and he started dancing around with everyone cheering and clapping along. It was absolutely hilarious and brilliant entertainment for 8am in the morning while drinking beer! Some more dance music came on and the two people that had been serving us drinks and food appeared, and gave a catwalk-style fashion show of alpaca wool jumpers!! It was totally surreal but the whole group got really into it. From Ollantaytambo we got a coach back to our previous hotel in Cusco, and quite a few of us slept through the whole journey. Lunch was spent at the hotel and then people spent the free afternoon shopping, sleeping or contacting home. Now that we'd completed the trek our bodies just decided to shut down completely. Our thighs and calves ached more than ever before, and we had blisters, sore knees, aching ankles... Young girl selling things to Teri in the street

Random lama man on the train!
On the Perurail train
We headed into the Cusco main square for our last dinner together and had a few drinks after in one of the bars. One of the young girls selling things in the streets tied a balloon to Teri's jacket and then kept untying it and tying it back on to try and get more money! Simon gave her 1 sol to make her go away! The two of us went back to the hotel around midnight so Teri could open her birthday present - a voucher to go horseriding! |
