On 30 May, Teri set off on her first of the ten challenges, and along with comrade Joanna hiked 40 miles across North Yorkshire, raising £83.54 for Mountain Rescue (ironic, if you read on!).
At 5.00am, we set off from the Lyke Wake stone at Osmotherley. Things started off well, and by the first couple of check points were averaging about an hour ahead of where we should be. Great! A little over half way round, Teri's right hip decided to start hurting, and then the left knee had over-compensated for it and decided to give way too. To top this off, we also managed to get lost. Not slightly lost, but very lost! Thank goodness for Joanna's amazing map-reading and navigating skills and the ability to take a bearing, as this eventually (after a 4-mile and 3-hour detour) led us back to the right path.
Teri was in a lot of pain by now, but with just over 10 miles to go there was no way we were stopping. We slowed down after this time to a pace of around a mile and a half an hour, much slower than the four and a half mile an hour pace we had originally been setting.
Joanna stayed in high spirits and helped keep Teri moving onwards, and at just before 10pm we reached our last checkpoint. Just over a mile left to go! It was pitch black by this time, so we plodded onwards with our headtorches switched on, and met Matt at the final Lyke Wake stone around 11pm.
It took a while to get in the car at the end after 18-hours of walking, and even longer to get out of the car at Matt's parents after the journey home, and I can honestly say it's possibly the most pain I ever remember enduring! Saying that, I had a great time completing this challenge; Jo was an amazing comrade and really did help keep me going at times, and didn't even complain once at how much I had to slow the pace because my legs were giving way! Thanks, Jo!
Starting the day at Osmotherly Lyke Wake stone Ending the day at Ravenscar, 18 hours of walking later!
