The Father of the Bride's Speech
Teri's Dad only wrote a few words down for his speech and unfortunately it's the only one that they didn't catch on film! But here are a few things that Bernard talked about during his speech...
Luckily, Teri and Matt's favour for Bernard was a miniature bottle of whiskey, which he asked Teri to open for him so he could take a swig before starting on his speech! "The golf course yesterday was....oops wrong piece of paper!" The opening line of the real speech was then, "Well, what can I say?" and Bernard went on to talk about how proud Teri has made him over the years, and how much her and Matt have achieved together including their trip to Peru and buying a house together. He also mentioned about the time Teri decided to drive straight over a roundabout, literally, her love for dancing and her horse, Bubbles. Bernard told the story of when Teri broke her arm when she was eight years old, by jumping off a swing. That evening, she could not get changed into her pyjamas so her Dad threatened to take her to the hospital. They made Teri turn her arm this way and that and it made her feel sick, and when the X-ray came back it showed why; Teri had suffered a very bad break in her arm. "The pain that poor girl must have gone through." |
He also mentioned the first time he met Matt. Teri used to fill up her car with petrol for free at a petrol station near her Dad's, and one weekend on her way home from Lincoln (with Matt), they didn't quite make it all the way there and Bernard had to head out to them with some petrol to get them on their way. He thought Matt was wearing "a duffel coat - typical student clothes".
The other story that was brought up was when Matt asked Bernard for his daughter's hand in marriage. Matt took him for a day trip to the Emirates Stadium, with tickets that he'd 'won through work'. However it wasn't until they were driving home and Matt's feet were shifting and Bernard thought he was going to ask him to pull over so he could go to the toilet, when he finally plucked up the courage to ask the question.
Bernard finished his speech by asking everyone to be upstanding and join him in toasting the Bride and Groom.
